Who They Are
Formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF is a global leader in type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy. The foundation has the vision of a “world without type 1 diabetes” and the mission of “improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.”
The JDRF has been a powerhouse in T1D fundraising and various outreach efforts since the 1970s and has numerous US locations and global affiliates.
What They Do
The JDRF focuses on several key areas to support their mission:
- Funding Innovative Research
- Political Advocacy
- Community Support
To date, the organization has helped to fund over $2 billion in type 1 diabetes research, with over 500 research grants currently supported with JDRF-backed funding, in the US, Europe, India and Australia.
The organization has an array of fundraising initiatives, including walks, rides, galas, etc. In 2018, almost one million participated in 200 JDRF walks, with many thousands attending other types of fundraising events.
According to the 2018 Report, over $100 million dollars of proceeds were directed to research aimed at curing, treating, or preventing type 1 diabetes. Research support was extended to the following key areas:
- Beta Cell Regeneration and Replacement
- Immunotherapy Research
- Improving Glycemic Control
- Artificial Pancreas Efforts
- Complications Research
- Prevention Efforts
Altogether, 75 different clinical trials were supported in 2018.
Additionally, other advocacy efforts span various issues pertinent to the type 1 community, including a focus on the issues of insulin affordability and expanded insurance coverage for the most relevant medications and technologies.
